New publication! Meeting report: an interdisciplinary approach to addressing anxiety in undergraduate active learning biology courses

katelyncooper1

Katey just published a report revealing how undergraduate biology courses, despite boosting learning through active participation, may inadvertently heighten fear of failure, fear of negative evaluation, and fear of isolation. They found frequent low-stakes assessments and peer-based activities can create stressful learning environments for some students.

To reduce anxiety while maintaining student engagement, they offer solutions, including: normalizing mental health discussions in class, carefully structuring participation activities, and teaching coping methods (e.g., brief mindfulness exercises) to help foster supportive learning environments for biology undergraduates.
