Katey just published a study on examining how college science instructors perceive the benefits and costs of inviting students to voluntarily answer questions (VANQ) in large courses. Interviewing 21 instructors at a research-intensive U.S. university, the team found that instructors commonly viewed VANQ as a way to enhance student learning for both volunteers and listeners, build student knowledge and skills, and create a welcoming classroom environment compared to cold-calling. At the same time, they acknowledged that VANQ can reinforce inequities in participation (with certain students dominating) and expose volunteers to negative judgement.
