We found that most students experience mild to moderate fear of neative evaluation in active learning classrooms and it can cause them to overthink their responses and to not participate in class. Fear of negative evaluation disproportionately impacts women, LGBTQ+ students, and students with disabilities, and is most likely to be evoked by presenting alone and being cold called.
