Katey led the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) LGBTQ+ Committee conducted the largest survey to date of LGBTQ+ biologists.

The study found trans and gender non-conforming biologists reported lower belonging and morale within the workplace, professional societies, and the biology community compared with cis straight biologists. Many LGBTQ+ biologists reported that their workplaces are moderately inclusive yet, more than 20% reported experiencing exclusionary behavior at work. Biologists emphasize the importance of institutional support and community building in creating more inclusive workplaces for LGBTQ+ individuals.
